A webcam can only record the light that is actually present. Renters and small desks share the same constraint: no drilling, and often no room for a floor stand. Video call platforms increasingly include built-in image adjustments. Zoom’s support documentation describes a feature that adjusts brightness for low-light environments and a portrait-lighting option that dims the background to make the presenter stand out.[5] These are genuinely useful for borderline situations, such as a slightly dim room in the evening.

They do not fix backlighting, since brightening the whole frame brightens the background along with your face rather than correcting the imbalance between them. They do not remove harsh overhead shadows, since that requires light arriving from a different angle, not more of it from the same angle. And they cannot add detail a small, noisy sensor never captured in the first place. Treat in-app adjustments as a final polish on top of correct physical lighting, not a replacement for it.
