Place your key light roughly 45 degrees to one side of your camera, slightly above your eyeline, and angled down at your face. Step by step: placing your light

1. Pick a side

Either side works equally well. If a window or another fixed light source is already in the room, put your key light on the same general side so you are not creating two competing shadows pulling in different directions.

2. Set the angle

Think of your face as the center of a clock, with the camera at 12. Placing the light at roughly 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock, rather than directly at 12, gets you close to the 45-degree target without needing a protractor.
