A useful power outage kit is a set of small systems, not a pile of gadgets. It should let you see safely, receive alerts, communicate, protect temperature-sensitive food and medicine, and leave if the home becomes unsafe. Put these items in one accessible location before the next outage:

  • One headlamp per person, plus at least one area lantern
  • Spare batteries in the sizes your devices use
  • Charged USB power banks and the correct charging cables
  • Battery or hand-crank radio for local alerts
  • Refrigerator and freezer appliance thermometers
  • Drinking water and shelf-stable food that requires little preparation

1. Rooms go dark

Headlamps keep both hands free for stairs, breakers, children, and cleanup. Area lanterns make a bathroom, kitchen, or shared room usable without pointing a narrow beam. Choose simple controls, a stable base, and a low mode that extends runtime. Standard replaceable batteries are easier to share across devices; rechargeable lights reduce ongoing waste but need a charging plan.

2. Phones and alerts lose power

A phone is a map, warning receiver, flashlight, payment device, and contact list, so protect its energy budget. Download offline maps, enable low-power mode, dim the screen, and stop background tasks. Keep one cable per connector type in the kit; a full power bank is useless with the wrong cable.

Do not buy by milliamp-hours alone. Compare USB-C input and output, rated wattage, number of ports, size, warranty, and whether the battery has a visible safety certification from an appropriate nationally recognized laboratory. 3. Food temperatures become uncertain

Buy one appliance thermometer for the refrigerator and one for the freezer. FDA says the refrigerator should be at or below 40°F and the freezer at or below 0°F before an outage. An unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours; a full unopened freezer holds temperature for about 48 hours, or about 24 hours when half full.[2]

The thermometer is the decision tool. Appearance and smell cannot prove food is safe. Keep doors closed, group frozen food, freeze water containers in advance, and know where block or dry ice may be available. 4. Medical routines are interrupted

Create a separate device-and-medication sheet. Record exact model numbers, normal power use, startup behavior, internal battery duration, charging connector, backup procedure, supplier, clinician, and emergency destination. Keep prescriptions and supply lists current.

FDA advises device users to seek manufacturer information about emergency operation and to notify the public-health authority when evacuating with a device.[3] Never substitute a generic battery estimate for a clinician- and manufacturer-approved plan. 5. The home becomes too hot or cold

A gadget kit cannot make every home habitable indefinitely. Include layers, blankets, sun shades, water, oral rehydration supplies appropriate for your household, and a written destination plan. Know nearby cooling or warming centers and who needs transportation.

CDC warns that fans alone do not prevent heat illness in very hot conditions and recommends moving to an air-conditioned location when necessary. It also treats a body temperature below 95°F as a medical emergency.[1] Do not burn charcoal indoors, use a gas oven for heat, or improvise combustion heating.

6. Backup equipment creates a new hazard

CO alarms belong in a blackout plan before any fuel-burning generator, stove, heater, or lantern is considered. CPSC says portable generators must be outdoors at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust facing away, and calls for battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas.[4]

Match backup power to the job

Separate small USB loads from AC appliances before choosing one oversized backup device.

Use the smallest appropriate layer:

  • Power bank: phones, small USB lights, and selected USB accessories
  • UPS: automatic short-duration continuity for a modem, ONT, router, computer, or NAS
  • Portable power station: longer AC or DC backup for measured portable loads
  • Fuel generator: outdoor-only higher-energy supply when legal placement, fuel, weather protection, and safe electrical connection are solved
  • Permanent system: transfer equipment and larger batteries or generators designed and installed for selected circuits or whole-home loads

Room-by-room placement

Bedrooms: headlamps within reach, shoes beside the bed, and a working CO alarm outside sleeping areas.

Kitchen: appliance thermometers, manual can opener, water, shelf-stable meals, cooler plan, and a lantern placed away from the stove.

Network area: labeled UPS battery outlets, modem/ONT/router map, and a tested shutdown procedure.

Medical supply area: device sheet, medication list, chargers, consumables, clinician-approved backup, and evacuation contacts.

Exit: keys, documents, cash, weather layers, pet carriers, mobility equipment, and a go-bag.

Electrical panel: a flashlight and a plain-language circuit list. Do not remove covers or touch damaged or wet electrical equipment.

Six-month maintenance test

Put two recurring dates on the calendar, ideally before the main hot, cold, storm, or wildfire season.

  1. Charge every rechargeable battery and inspect for swelling, damage, corrosion, or recalls.
  2. Test flashlights, lanterns, radios, smoke alarms, and CO alarms.
  3. Replace expired food, water, medicine, and first-aid supplies as appropriate.
  4. Update contacts, prescriptions, device models, pet needs, and meeting locations.
  5. Run a controlled UPS test and a supervised power-station test with the intended loads.

Write actual results on the checklist: “router stack ran 74 minutes on March test” is actionable; “UPS should last a while” is not.

What not to buy first

Avoid starting with an enormous battery, a bargain generator, or a box of tactical gadgets. None solves a missing medication plan, unsafe indoor temperature, dead provider network, contaminated water, or inaccessible evacuation route. A $10 thermometer can prevent a bad food-safety guess; a labeled cable can make an existing power bank useful; a written destination can matter more than another 500Wh.

The best first purchase is the item that closes the most serious documented gap in your household plan.

Final checklist

Build in this order: safe light, reliable alerts, water and usable food, medication and medical-device continuity, temperature escape plan, then measured backup power. Store supplies where they can be reached in darkness, document who uses them, and test the whole system twice a year.
